'Every new cosmetic and hygiene products such as make-up, soap or toothpaste has to pass a thorough safety assessment before it can be introduced to the European Market. Until recently animals were used for such purposes. However, in March 2013 a full ban of animal testing for cosmetics in the EU entered into force and new methods and approaches are required. At DFKI we are developing novel algorithms and software for looking deep into the cells and analyse their macromolecular structure to reveal and understand any adverse effects that would otherwise remain undetected by the standard methods. This film takes you behind scenes of this large-scale collaborative EU research project co-funded by the European Commission and the European trade association Cosmetics Europe.
