'The use of animals in scientific research has been a controversial issue for well over a hundred years. The basic problem can be stated quite simply: Research with animals has saved human lives, lessened human suffering, and advanced scientific understanding, yet that same research can cause pain and distress for the animals involved and usually results in their death. The Annual Statistics of Scientific Procedures on Living Animals, Great Britain 2018 show that a total of 3.52 million procedures were completed in the UK in 2018, including tests on mice (1.1 million), rats (170,665), birds (146,860), rabbits (11,159), guinea pigs (6,445), monkeys (3,207), dogs (4, 481), cats (159). A number of these commercial products are tested on animals. Commercial products are tested on animals to ensure product safety for consumers. For example, mascaras, shampoos, and perfumes are usually tested on the eyes of rabbits and oftentimes the eyelids of animals are forcefully held open for better absorption. In the UK, the most recent figures show 3.79 million procedures were carried out using living animals in 2017.experimental procedures which means the animal was used in \"scientific studies\" to help with things such as: the study of biological functions and diseases. Development of treatments. Safety testing of medicines and other chemicals Surgical training and education. Environmental research, Species protection. The other half were used for the creation/ breeding of genetically altered (GA) animals.'
