'I\'m Worried About Mouth Cancer - Borehamwood Dental Cosmetics http://www.cornerhousedentalcare.co.uk call 020 8207 5707 My name is Dr Neeta Patel and I am one of the dentists here at Cornerhouse Dental Care in Elstree, Hertfordshire. Oral cancer can develop in any part of the mouth. The lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, palate and throat can be affected. More information about Mouth Cancer http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/cancer-of-the-mouth/pages/introduction.aspx Many people are aware of lung, breast and bone cancer but mouth cancer if not detected early can be fatal and this is increasing as people seem to be smoking and drinking more. A simple inspection by a dentist can find any abnormal lesions if they are present. Whenever a patient comes to see us for an examination we will always assess the soft tissues in the mouth both inside and outside and this will include the jaw joint too. We will take a thorough history as the main risk factors include smoking, excessive use of alcohol, too much sun exposure and chewing tobacco. We can then advise the patient to be aware of anything that looks abnormal to them. A lesion can present in many forms. White or red patches which look like an ulcer but does not hurt like an ulcer should always be checked especially if it has been present for more than 2 weeks. See a dentist immediately. We recommend regular visits at least once a year and again this is especially important if you smoke or drink and even more so if you are over the age of 40. If you wear dentures then it is still important to attend as a dental check -up is not just about the teeth but also involves all other areas in the mouth. So to summarise, attend the dentist regularly and if you are worried about a white or red patch or painless ulcer then please go straight away as in this case seeing your dentist could save your life.
