Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry 5014 Roswell Rd NE 404-330-9089 www.AtlantaCenterForCosmeticDentistry.com Dr. Debra Gray King from the Atlanta Center for cosmetic Dentistry interviewed on CNN talks about the DDS System. An intraoral device that helps patients to take smaller bites and eat slower, allowing the body's built-in system to tell our brains when we've had enough to eat. This new approach slows down the eating process so that your built-in satiety response can allow you to feel full after consuming less food. And a new diet tool plans on taking the bite out of weight loss. We're going to show you how filling up on one area, could help you lose weight in another. Kat Carney: For your health, I'm Kat Carney. When it comes to weight loss, we're all familiar with the volume of products on the market promising to help us shed those extra pounds. Well, now there's a new kid on the block and it costs about $400. You can only get it at your dentist's office, but does it really work? Well, joining us now with some insight is company spokesman, Dr. Debra King. Dr. King, thanks so much for being here today. Dr. Debra King: Thanks for having me, Kat. Kat Carney: Now, this device used to be called The Dental Diet System. Now it's DDS. Now what is it that the company is claiming it does? How does it work? Dr. Debra King: The DDS System is a discrete oral appliance that fits in the roof of your mouth, so it causes you to eat more slowly and chew slowly, and take smaller bites so that it gives your body a chance to tell that you're full before you've actually over eaten. Kat Carney: Well, now while overeating is frequently a cause of someone's weight problem, sometimes there's actually some type of underlying medical problem, so how do you figure out whether the problem is really over eating or whether someone really needs to be in their family physician's office as opposed to their dentist's office? Dr. Debra King: Well if there is any chance that you have other medical issues, you should definitely see your physician but let's face it, 65% of Americans are over weight and we live in a fast food world where we're going through drive thrus and you can super-size things. For a lot of us, it is directly related to the fact that we're eating too much and too fast. Kat Carney: Well now, headline news put in a call to the American Dental Association and they knew nothing about the device beyond what they had read in the press and we were only able to get our hands on one study that was sponsored by the manufacturer of the device. Can we expect to see any independent evidence that the device is actually effective? Dr. Debra King: The Pennington Medical Bio-research Center study was actually an independent study, and it showed that the test group that actually wore the appliance ate slower and took smaller bites, and therefore they ate 23% less food. I actually had one of these appliances myself and I have found the exact same thing. I'm enjoying my food and I'm eating the food I want to eat with my family at the dinner table, but because I'm eating slower, I could full faster so I'm not eating as large of portions as I used to. Kat Carney: Well, now I mentioned a moment ago that the device isn't cheap. It runs about $400-$500 and it's available only at a dentist office. Now, hate to be hard on you here but we are all familiar with those late night infomercials as promising that 30 day money back guarantee. Do patients get that with the DDS? Dr. Debra King: The DDS appliance, it's a one time investment of $400-$500 and it's a one time thing. As long as you have the appliance, you can wear it for a long time and compared to other approached that's very reasonable. It involves two dental visits and a custom-made appliance, so it seems to me that it's very much in line with the right investment. Kat Carney: Great! Ok Dr. Debra King, thanks so much for your time today! Dr. Debra King: Thank you, Kat! Kat Carney: And for your health, I'm Kat Carney.
