Lisa Rayam: Looking into the sweet smiles of your baby, it may be hard to believe that it's the time for his first visit to the dentist office. Getting the right start now could set him up for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Fox 5 Health reporter, Tana Brackin, has details. Dr. Debra Gray King: Your teeth are so pretty and white! Tana Brackin: That's because, even though she's just 3, little Morgan LaMarca takes good care of her teeth. She has since her first trip to the dentist office two years ago. Dr. Debra Gray King: Is that tickling a little bit? Melinda LaMarca:They make her feel so comfortable! She comes in and she's just happy to come, which is very different from the experiences I used to have when I was young. I was very nervous, very scared of the dentist. She just loves it! Lisa Rayam: Dentists say making a child feel comfortable in this chair is important to making sure they keep their beautiful smiles throughout life. Dr. Debra Gray King: If they have fun and have good experiences as a child, they're not going to avoid coming to see us as an adult. Tana Brackin: This may come to a surprise to you, but the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends you bring your child in for his first dental visit at the age of one. Dr. Debra Gray King: We call it almost a "fun visit" because we're just making it fun for them, introducing them to the water, squirt water in their mouth, and the suction we call "Mr. Thirsty". Melinda LaMarca: Close your teeth and go (brush). Tana Brackin: But it's not all fun and games. Dentists say their main goal is to teach parents how to care for little smiles at home. Melinda LaMarca: The first time was a real education, because you know, as a new mother I didn't know when she should start brushing her teeth, how to brush her teeth, what type of toothbrush, what type of toothpaste could be used, etc. Tana Brackin: Melinda LaMarca says having those answers has given her daughter a start that makes them both smile. Melinda LaMarca: Let's see what they look like... Daughter: (Smiles) Melinda LaMarca: They're perfect! Tana Brackin: In Atlanta, Tana Brackin, Fox 5 News. Lisa Rayam: Although the first dentist visit should be at the age of one, Dr. King says dental care should begin before then. Use a soft cloth to wipe your baby's teeth as soon as they start to show, and when your child has eight teeth, it's time to start using a toothbrush.
